Laos is divided into 17 provinces (khoueng) and 1 prefecture (nakhon louang) [1]. The country can be roughly divided into 3 geographic regions: Northern Laos, Central Laos and Southern Laos

Districts

Each province is subdivided into districts (muang), which are later divided into villages (ban). In the past, there was a subdivision between the muangs and the bans, which were called tasseng (or subdistricts/cantons).
