Nintendo Force Magazine (sometimes called NF Magazine for copyright reasons) is a bi-monthly magazine that centers upon various Nintendo hardware products. The magazine includes staff members from Destructoid, GoNintendo, IGN, Nintendojo, 1Up.com, Nintendo World Report, and the writer and founder of the online comic Brawl in the Family, among others. Its first issue was dated January/February 2013.
History
[edit]NF Magazine was created with the goal of being a spiritual successor to Nintendo's official magazine, Nintendo Power, following its cancellation in 2012. The magazine was announced to the public in December of that year by IGN editor and magazine founder Lucas M. Thomas. Thomas stated that he had begun to plan for the magazine upon hearing of Nintendo Power's cancellation.[1]
The magazine's first issue was released on January 11, 2013,[2] hosted under HP's MagCloud service with a price of $17.99 for one print issue and $4.99 for a digital one. It had 80 pages, with a review of Fire Emblem: Awakening and a preview of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon as its main features.
Overview and design
[edit]The inside of the front cover of each magazine features a small news section, usually about a topic involved with the magazine or one of its employees. This is followed by a table of contents and the 3-page Inbox section, a section with letters sent to the editors. These letters are sometimes responded to. The first two pages of the section also include a note from Lucas M. Thomas, an overview of the last issue, a section titled Carter's Corner written by Lucas' son Carter, and a featured letter. The last page of the section features another featured letter and a "Players' Poll".
This is followed by the News section, which provides information on recently announced Nintendo-related games and products, as well as some of the editors' reactions to the news in the form of their Mii characters' speech bubbles or the "Great!/Oh." format, which highlight two different reactions to the news. It also contains a "Collector's Corner" section, spotlighting video game-related merchandise.
After this is the Download section, which provides information on recently released and upcoming digital releases for games on the Nintendo eShop. This is followed by the "Features" section, which highlights certain topics or genres. After this is the Previews section, which shows information on upcoming games spread throughout pages accompanied by numerous screenshots and artwork. This section is followed by the Reviews section, where staff writers review the latest games. The games are rated on a scale of 1–10 with increments of .5.
The Retro section, which follows the Reviews section, takes a look at older video games in the industry, such as those for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. After this is the Community section, which is dedicated to Nintendo culture, covering Nintendo-related art, cosplay, and websites from fans. Throughout the magazine, there are two or three comics per issue related to Nintendo games, including one by webcomic Brawl in the Family's artist Matthew Taranto.
