The ampere (symbol: A, often shortened to amp) is the standard unit of electric current. An electric current of one ampere is one coulomb per second. The amp is named after André-Marie Ampère who studied electromagnetism.

The ampere is defined so the elementary charge e is 1.602 176 634 × 10⁻¹⁹ C or A•s.
