"Username 666" is a Japanese creepypasta screenlife YouTube video released in 2008. Created by PiroPito known online as nana825763 (born 1988). The video shows a fictional scenario where a internet user punching "www.youtube.com/666" into their browser and refreshing until they are taken to a heavily distorted, hellish version of the website. In 2022, there was a bug where if one changed the YouTube URL, the video would redirect to this video.

[edit]An unseen computer user attempts to visit a 2006 style YouTube channel URL "www.youtube.com/666" with the name bearing the number of the beast. The account is shown as suspended, but the user continues to refresh the page a few times. Slowly the layout of the site starts to take on a more sinister tone, until they are taken to a heavily distorted, hellish and bloody version of the website.[1][2][3] At the end of the video, a hand comes out of the screen and the video cuts out.[4][5]
History
[edit]"Username 666" was made by PiroPito, better know by their online handle nana825763 (born 1988)[6] is a notorious Japanese surrealist filmmaker game developer and let's player. His best known for his "Username 666" video and other horror videos, like "Another YouTube"[7] and "my house walk-through".[8][9][10] In Japan, "Username 666" went viral in the months following the original video upload, with its status as a viral legend has spread throughout the internet.[11] PiroPito has been uploading videos since 2006. In an article by BuzzFeed News, Rachael Krishna praised his Minecraft let's play for being charming.[6][12]
In an interview with PiroPito, he stated that he's inspirited by "various films and novels, cult films, avant-garde films, surrealist films and paintings, dreams and the unconscious", and artists like "Shuji Terayama, Brothers Quay, Schwann Kmeier, Yasutaka Tsutsui, Kobo Abe, Yumeno Kyusaku, Greenaway, Suzan Pitt, Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Shigeru Mizuki".[13] Since 2019, PiroPito started making the game Metaphysical Region, with a trailer releasing in 2023. The game is still in development.[5][13] YouTube banned an account named "666" as a reference to the original short, with the ban only being lifted in early 2025.[7]
In 2022, there was a bug, where if one changed the YouTube URL "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=" and removed the letter "H", the video would redirect to the "Username 666" video.[14]
Reception
[edit]Bloody Disgusting called the soundtrack of the video "[A] simple bit of digital trickery was so creepy that some internet users still insist that it’s based on real paranormal phenomena."[7] Screen Rant said "Username 666 is an excellent example of early viral internet horror, and those nostalgic for YouTube's early days may want to give this one a watch."[1] Blumhouse Productions called the video "truly terrifying."[11]
