History
[edit]The place-name 'Shopland' is first attested in a list of c. 1000 AD of the manors of St Paul's Cathedral in Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (MS. 383), where it appears as Scopingland. It appears as Scopelanda in the Domesday Book of 1086,[3] and as Scopiland in the Feet of Fines in 1208. The name means 'island with a shed', the first element being the Old English sceoppa, or the Middle English schoppe, meaning 'shop' or 'shed',[4] the origin of the modern word 'shop'.[5] The name "Shopland" was first recorded in 1306.[6]
Shopland was in Rochford hundred.[7] In 1894 Shopland became part of Rochford Rural District, On 1 October 1933 the parish was abolished and merged with Sutton and Southend on Sea,[8] and the Southend part became part of the County Borough of Southend on Sea. St Mary Magdalene's church was demolished in 1957[9] following wartime bomb damage, artifacts were removed and went to Sutton Church and others. Shopland churchyard is rededicated every year.[10] In 1974 the Sutton part of Shopland became part of Rochford non-metropolitan district and the Southend part became part of Southend-on-Sea non-metrpolitan district however Southend-on-Sea parish was abolished so the Southend part became unparished. In 1998 Southend-on-Sea district became a unitary authority area.
