Rio 3 [a] is an upcoming American animated musical comedy film directed by Carlos Saldanha. It is the third installment in the Rio franchise and the sequel to Rio 2 (2014). It will be the first theatrical Rio film not produced by Blue Sky Studios, following the studio's closure on April 10, 2021.
Production
[edit]Director Carlos Saldanha has long expressed interest in continuing the franchise. In April 2014, he stated, "Of course, I have a lot of stories to tell, so we're [starting to] prepare for it."[2]
Following the closure of Blue Sky Studios in 2021, production on the next Rio installment was uncertain. 20th Century Animation, a division of 20th Century Studios, is now handling the project, marking a new era for the franchise.[3]
In 2023, Saldanha confirmed that he was actively developing a new project for Rio 3, though plot details remain under wraps. He has expressed a desire to explore different regions of Brazil and showcase new characters.[1]
Voice Cast
[edit]While no official casting announcements have been made, it is expected that original cast members from previous films, including Jesse Eisenberg (Blu) and Anne Hathaway (Jewel), may return. New characters are rumored to be introduced, continuing the musical and comedic tone of the franchise.
Animation and Music
[edit]The film is expected to continue the franchise’s signature vibrant animation style, highlighting Brazilian landscapes and culture. Musical numbers will likely feature both original songs and new compositions, following the pattern of the first two films. Composer John Powell, who scored the first two films, may return to handle the music, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Release
[edit]As of December 2024, no official release date has been announced for Rio 3. Production is reported to be in early stages, with voice recording and animation work planned to begin following script finalization.
