Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (also known as The Authority) [1] is a new entity that was formed as a result of the merger of the "midstream and downstream division" of the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the defunct Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), and the defunct Petroleum Equalization Fund (Management) Board (PEFMB). Its sister agency is the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) which oversees the upstream activities of the Nigeria Oil Industry. [2] [3] [4]

History

NMDPRA was created in August 2021, following the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021. The Act was made to provide legal, regulatory, governance, and fiscal framework for the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.

The Former President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari, in 2021 approved the appointment of Mr. Farouk Ahmed as the first Authority Chief Executive (ACE) of the NMDPRA, who still occupies the position till date. [5] [6]

Functions

The Authority is responsible for the regulation of the midstream and downstream petroleum operations in Nigeria which includes technical, operational, and commercial activities, amongst other roles. [7]
