Comment: There is no critical reception or analysis of the character which proves this subject meets the WP:GNG. Many statements are uncited and some are cited to unreliable sources. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:04, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
Comment: Needs cleanup, including fixing the bare urls and better headers, see Raichu for an example Olliefant (she/her) 16:47, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
Greninja
[edit]Greninja, known in Japan as Gekkouga, is a Pokemon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon media franchise. First introduced in the video games Pokémon X&Y. Since Greninja's debut, it has appeared in multiple games including Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Pokemon Legends Z-A, as well as various merchandise. Greninja has been primarily voiced in media by both Billy Bob Thompson..[1] and Yuji Ueda. Classified as a Water and Dark-type Pokémon, Greninja is a creature resembling a frog and a ninja, with its dark blue skin, tongue like scarf around its neck and mouth, and its webbed hands and feet. It is the final evolution of the Pokémon Froakie, and the evolution from the Pokémon Frogadier. In Pokémon Legends Z-A, a new mega evolution was added for the Pokémon. It took on an appearance, similar to its shiny counterpart featuring a black torso, with small water shuriken on its thighs, a pronounced blue crown on its head, and it stands upside down on its water shuriken made out of a gel-like membrane secreted from its body.[2]
Greninja was nominated as most popular Pokémon of the year in 2020[3], and has generally received a positive reception, largely due to its appearance in the Pokémon anime television series, as a companion of series protagonist Ash Ketchum during the series Pokémon XYZ.
Design
[edit]Standing at 4 ft 11 in tall, Greninja is a bipedal frog with long arms and feet, reminiscent of a human. It has blue skin, peach colored stomach, white oval shapes on its joints, webbed hands and feet, a tongue wrapped around its mouth like a scarf, sharp red eyes, and sharp protrusions out of its head. Whereas its pre-evolutions Froakie and Frogadier have bubbles that mimic the look of a scarf, Greninja instead has its tongue that mimics a scarf.
Mega Greninja has a black body, peach colored stomach, small water shuriken on its thighs, and sharper sky blue protrusions on its head, with a big water shuriken that allows it to stand upside down.[2] Greninja has an additional "Shiny Form", which changes the color of its skin and protrusions into black, while retaining the red tongue mimicking a scarf, and a blue bridge that connects the protrusions from its head.
Greninja received a special form, called Ash-Greninja, as due to the Bond Phenomenon from its trainer Ash Ketchum, it took on the characteristics of the trainer, gaining spiky black hair, a red middle protrusion, and black protrusions that match the color of the hair, as well as gaining a big water shuriken on its back.
Appearances
[edit]In video games
[edit]Greninja has appeared in all main series Pokémon video games after its initial appearance in Pokémon X&Y except Pokémon Sword and Shield, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The game Pokémon X&Y features the initial stage of evolution of Greninja, Froakie, as it is given to the player as one of 3 starter Pokémon by Professor Sycamore. In Pokémon Sun and Moon, upon completing the demo, the player receives Ash Ketchum's Greninja, giving the player access to its "Battle Bond" ability, which transforms Greninja into Ash-Greninja[4]. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it is one of the many Pokemon that gain new Mega Evolutions that were not in the prequel. When equipped with a "Mega Stone", Greninja can change into Mega Greninja. Greninja has appeared in the spin-off video game, Pokémon Unite, as well has been in the popular Super Smash Bros, debuting in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U[5] and is a re-occurring character in the sequel[6]
In Anime
[edit]In the anime, a Greninja is one of the main protagonist Ash Ketchum's Pokémon. As a Froakie, instead of playing with its companions, it would be training by itself in hopes of a strong trainer to be able to allow it to reach its full potential. After it sees Ash , it decides to join his team[7]. After it evolves into a Greninja, it trains together with Ash to be able to transform into its Ash-Greninja form, which is referred by other characters is a similar state to that of Mega Evolution. Greninja later re-appears in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, as Ash brings his Lucario to train with Greninja when realizing his bond with Lucario is similar to that of Greninja
