GABI is the stage name of American composer and singer-songwriter Gabrielle Herbst. She has released two studio albums, Sympathy (2015) and Empty Me (2018).

Life and career

[edit]

Gabrielle Herbst was born in East Otis, Massachusetts.[1] Herbst earned a Bachelor of Arts in composition and voice from Bard College, studying under Zeena Parkins and Marina Rosenfeld, and later received a Master of Music in composition from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with David Lang, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Martin Bresnick.[2]

Herbst adopted the stage name GABI for her singer-songwriter work, distinguishing it from her compositional work in contemporary classical music.[3]

In 2015, GABI released her debut album, Sympathy, on the label Software Recording Co.[4] It received coverage from many media outlets, including Pitchfork,[4] Observer,[5] and HHV-Mag.[6][7][8]

Her second album, Empty Me, was released in 2018 on Double Double Whammy.[9] Empty Me received reviews from Pitchfork,[9] No Recess! Magazine,[10] and other publications.[11][12][13]

Herbst is currently working on a new GABI album with producer Sebastian Gainsborough.[14]

Other projects

[edit]

Besides her GABI project, Herbst maintains an active career as a Western classical music composer, having been commissioned by organizations including the Jerome Foundation, the Nouveau Classical Project, The Knights, and Duo Noir.[14] She participated as a fellow in the American Opera Project’s “Composers & the Voice” program (2021–2023) and in 2023 was awarded a composition fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival.[14]

Musical style

[edit]

Herbst has cited influences including Björk, Alice Coltrane, Debussy, and Stravinsky.[2] Critics have compared her work to that of Julia Holter and Julianna Barwick.[4]
