The Chinese Computer Federation (CCF, Chinese: 中国计算机学会) is a national academic association for professionals in computer science and technology in China. It was founded in 1962 to promote research, education, and professional exchange in computing and is headquartered in Beijing.[1] CCF represents computer scientists, educators, and engineers across China and has more than 80 professional and regional chapters.[2]

History

[edit]

The federation was established in 1962 as part of early efforts to organise computing research in China. Activities were interrupted during the Cultural Revolution but resumed in the late 1970s as computing education and industry expanded nationwide. Since the 1980s, CCF has played a leading role in defining national computing curricula, publishing standards, and fostering links between academia and industry.[3][4]

In 2019, CCF gained international attention for suspending cooperation with the IEEE following restrictions that affected Huawei researchers, demonstrating its influence in global research policy debates.[5][6]

Activities

[edit]

CCF organises conferences, workshops, and competitions in computing and information technology. Its flagship annual meeting, the China National Computer Congress (CNCC), is among the largest computing conferences in Asia, gathering thousands of participants from academia, government, and industry.[7][8] Recent congresses have focused on topics such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and domestic chip development.[9]

The federation maintains a system of awards recognising excellence in computer science and sponsors academic journals and conference listings widely used within China’s research community.[10]

Governance and membership

[edit]

CCF operates under a council elected by its members and has disciplinary procedures and ethics committees that oversee member conduct. In 2020, the federation attracted international attention after expelling a member for inflammatory online statements, reflecting its governance autonomy and public visibility.[11]

Partnerships

[edit]

CCF collaborates with international publishers and societies, including Springer Nature, which co-publishes the Communications of the CCF and the Journal of Computer Science and Technology.[12] These partnerships help disseminate Chinese computing research to an international audience.
