History

[edit]

Pippa Begg and Jennifer Sundberg founded Board Intelligence in 2009.[1] In August 2024, K1 Investment Management made a majority investment in the company.[2] Industry coverage described the company’s plan to expand through acquisitions following the investment.[3] The Times reported that the deal valued the business at up to £230 million, and that following the transaction, Begg became the sole chief executive officer (CEO).[1]

In September 2024, Board Intelligence acquired TeamEngine, a Stockholm-based software firm specializing in board management.[3][4][5] In May 2025, the company acquired Competent Boards, a Toronto-based provider of director education and executive training programs.[6][7]

Operations

[edit]

Board Intelligence’s operations span advisory services and technology offerings, such as board management software and an artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to assist in producing board reports.[1][6] The company works across different sectors, including corporate, public, and higher education.[7][8][9][10] By February 2025, Board Intelligence had worked with 3,000 clients, including organisations such as Generali, Zurich Insurance Group, John Lewis, National Grid, and ITV.[1][6][11][12]

Research

[edit]

Board Intelligence conducts and publishes research on board effectiveness and corporate governance. Its Board Value Index is a recurring survey of directors in the UK and U.S. that explores board effectiveness and operations.[13][14][15] Separately, the company has collaborated with organisations like the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland (CGIUKI) on board reporting research, based on assessments completed by directors and governance professionals.[16][17] It has also published analyses of Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100 Index board-evaluation disclosures.[18]
